Team Simms vs. ISS JUS USS
In a rematch of last year’s league title game, Team Simms got revenge on Shannon
Shorter’s IJU with a 66-63 win. It was a game of halves today as Team Simms won the first
half by 13, and IJU had a strong comeback in the second to cut the lead down to one before
letting the game slip away after fouling on a three-point attempt by Dee Harrison. With a
couple of techs handed out and controversy at the end of the game, Team Simms was glad
to get out of the first day with a W.
Team Simms scored 66 points, but Dee Harrison and Jonathan Simmons combined
for 51 in a dominant showing to start off their season. Their two-man game made the
opposing defense rotate like crazy throughout as each of them demand so much attention.
Team Simms would often have Dee and Simmons set up on opposite wings and decide
which had a better matchup to get a good shot off. But after they got up 13 points at the
half, Simms’s defense lacked, allowing IJU to come back within a single bucket. Simms may
have gotten lucky today, but still, they look like one of the best couple teams this summer
and will look to continue their streak against Danuel House and Nuff Said Monday night at
8:45.
There are not many teams that could only score 19 points in the first half and then
almost win the game as their opponent scored better in the second, but IJU balled out.
Shannon Shorter, defending MVP of the league, was the only scorer in the first quarter,
putting up just five points. They recovered some in the second but still lost it by four points
as Shorter was getting little help from his teammates. Then, enter Jermaine Greene and
John Gillon. They combined for over 30 points in the second half, dominating on the
lackluster Simms defense and using their speed and grit to get back into the game. If IJU can
put together two good halves of basketball consistently, they should have no issue getting
back to this year’s title game. They will look to rebound against Mob Ties on Wednesday at
8:45.
